Holsten being United.
In the year 1762 the Gottorp duke, Karl Peter Ulrik, became emperor of Russia under the name of Peter 3rd.
He har inherited his parents passionate hate toward the Danish royal roulers and gave at once his army, which until now had fought Frederik The Great, order to leave for Denmark.
By this threatening danger Denmark summoned all its strength. The army was rised to 70.000 men, and the fleet was elerted for time of war.
Then Peter after a few months of ruling was overthrown at a court revolution by his wife Katharina 2nd, and by that the danger had passed away.
She wanted to achieve friendship with the Danes, and in 1767 Bernstorff (johan Ernst Bernstorff, Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs 1751 - 1770) succeeded in convincing her, on her under age son Povls behalf, to accept an exchange deal in Kiel. It was carried out in 1773, when Povl had come of age.
By this Denmark lost Oldenburg but achieved in return, that Povl approved Snderjyllands incorporation into the Danish crown as well as loosing the Gottorp part of Holsten. For the first time since 1544 the separated parts of Holsten were gathered under the Danish king.
