When Abel died the nobility against common practice passed over Abels sons, and acclaimed Bengerds youngest son Christoffer.
This choice became the reason for conflicts in more generations. When Abels descendants realized, that they were excluded from the crown benefiting a younger line, they with so much greater eagerness hold on to the fact, that their family had old reights to command in Jutland, and they were always ready to join the new king-familys enemies.
At the same time Christoffer came into an irreconcilable fight with the arch bishop Jakob Erlandsn.
When this fight was at its peak, the king suddenly died in Ribe (29th May 1259) from poisoned altar wine. The rumours say, that he became poisoned by abbot Arnfast from Ryd Monastery, who had poured it up.
Then Margrete, the kings widow, took control on behalf of their son Erik Klipping.
Christoffer was buried in Ribe Cathedral.
Christoffer was son of Valdemar Sejr and queen Berengaria.
In 1248 married to Margrete Sambiria (1230-82) daughter of prince Sambor and Mechtilde.
Christoffer and Margrete had the children:
Erik Klipping, 1249-86, later king
Mechtilde, married to Albrecht of Brandenburg
Margrete, married to Johan of Holsten
Ingeborg
Valdemar
