At his death in 1076 Svend Estridsen should have left behind 14 sons. Five of them became kings after each other.
At first the people elected Harald Hen at Isøre Ting, and he became popular by confirming laws, which the people wanted.
More of his brothers took advantage of his weakness and rebelled.
Pope Gregor VII intervened to the advantage of Harald Hen and urged him to become the Popes deputy like his father. At the same time the Pope ordered Harald to intervene against the wide spread superstition in Denmark.
The byname Hen means “sharpen stone”.
Harald Hen was married to Margarethe Asbjørnsdatter.
Harald Hen was buried in Dalby Church in Skåne.
