Denmarks Armed Forces.

A huge amount of money was spend on the military. Both the army and the navy became much more powerful, than they had been before 1660. Christian 5th maintained even in time of peace a recruited army of 20.000 - 30.000 men (mostly Germans).
To raise some of the money spent on military, both Christian 5th and Frederik 4th hired out more of the recruited regiments for foreign warfare.
In Norway were no recruited troops, but from the time of Christian 4th a national armed force under Norwegan leaders was established.

Christian 5th also established a Danish militia under Norwegian leaders, but had to dissolve it again because of the miserable agricultural conditions.
Frederik 4th again established a Danish militia (1701), which asserted itself in the Swedish war 1709 - 20. The language of command in the recruited army as well as in the Norwegan and Danish militia was German. The navy was reestablished by Kort Adeler (Norwegan, famous from Dutch and Venicean service), and the Danish nobleman Niels Juel, who as its leader won the famous victories in the Skånske ( a part of Sweden) war.

The language of command in the navy was Danish, its crew consisted of Danish and Norwegan sailors. Among the officers was until the Skånske war found many Dutchmen, but after that their numbers dropped, and gradually it was almost only Danes and Norwegians, who commanded the navy.
In number of boats it was quite smaller than the Swedish, but it was superior to this because of the skills of the crews.
