When Erik Ejegod died on crusade to The Holy Land, Niels was elected king.
He was a powerless king and very mean. The severe regulations of the law were softened, and law and order became less. At the same time the country was raided by Vendic robber gangs.

9th August 1113 he lost a battle at Lytjenborg in Venden. At Fotevig in Skåne he also fought a battle in 1134, but lost, and Niels fled to Urnehoved, where he appointed Harald Kesja by-king.
Then king Niels left for Slesvig, where the people killed him. He is buried in Slesvig Cathedral.

Niels was son of Svend Estridsen. Married about 1104 to Margrete Fredkulla (died about 1127), daughter of king Inge of Sweden, was first married to king Magnus Barfod of Norway. The byname Fredkulla means “the peace girl”, as her first marriage was part of the peace treaty between Sweden and Norway.

Niels was married second time in 1130 to Ulvhild, daughter of the Norwegian chief Hakon Finssøn. Ulvhild was first married to king Inge the Younger of Sweden. She left Niels to marry king Sverker of Sweden.
King Niels and Margrete had the children:

Inge, (1106-12), kicked to death by a horse.
Magnus, about 1106-34), married to Richiza of Poland. Magnus was killed at Fotevig 1134.

King Niels had together with a mistress the daughter
Ingertha, married to one of Knud Lavard’s murderers, Ubbe Jarl.
